I am using Ableton Suite 8.1.4 and have recently got my hands on Waves 8.0.0.12. I have been fooling around with these great plug-ins for days, but still have not figured out how to bloody sidechain with the compressors. On every tutorial I see, the instructor's plug-ins have a key symbol and mine do not.

Even on the C1 the waves site says External side-chaining (Pro Tools only) I'm not sure if that means 1 an external source from another DAW track. Or 2 an external audio stream as a source. If it means (2) then that could mean that you could still do (1) but not (2) other than that, if it did neither in Live then the sidechain signal could only be a Re-filtered version of the actuall source entering the plug-in. Basically meaning, the (same) source.
What you are wanting is technically known as externally keyed, frequency conscious sidechain compression. So the waves info is a little confusing even on this C1 comp. Here's another bit of chatter. There are very few fully featured sidechain compressors. You'll need a vst mac version for live if it doesn't run audio units.

Try the demo of this one and see if you can get it to work. If you can get it to work, this one will probably last you a long time. Going in and out of live will probably not make the waves work. I think it will potentially only do internal sidechain and not externally key to anything except itself. However, the waves internal sidechains I always thought were very good. So if it turns out to not do what you thought it would, at least you have a good comp. Hey sharlaton, I'm new too, but I have the answer for you.
No, there are no Waves plugins in your version of Waves that are recognized as having a sidechain input in Ableton. I happen to have the same bundle and I went through every single compressor/gate/anything that would have this feature. But there's good news! You are NOT limited to Ableton's compressor.
