Paws In Typing Town

Tell students we will begin learning to type today. Before class begins, I place stickers on the home row keys of a demonstration keyboard. Seal Maker Crack Serial Winrar. (I have a keyboard that no longer works; I cut the cable off of it and use it for demonstration purposes.) I use yellow smiley face stickers for the keys that my left fingers rest on. I use pink smiley face stickers for the keys that my right fingers rest on. Have the students sit in a large group on the floor around you. Hold up a keyboard for them to see. Explain finger placement to them.

Emphasize that pointer fingers always rest on F and J keys. Students should be able to feel the 'bumps' on these keys. Once they locate these keys and lay their pointer fingers on them, the other fingers just simply spread over the keys next to F and J. I usually have a student hold my demonstration keyboard up in the air. From a seated position (my back is to the students), I reach up and show them how my fingers lay on the keyboard. Show them that thumbs rest on the space bar. Also, tell students to keep their fingers curved and wrists flat.

Send them back to their seats to find F and J. Remind them to feel for the bumps. They should gently rest their fingers on the homerow and thumbs on the space bar. Remind them about curving their fingers. Walk around to each student to check their finger placement; make corrections as needed.

Have students interact with and watch 'Typing with Katie' to reinforce skills. It would be preferable for students to do this at their own computer because it is interactive.

Students are required to do some light typing with keys from the home row. Remind them to keep their fingers on the home row as they complete the activity. Tell students that next time we will start working with a keyboarding program called PAWS Typing. Reflection: Finger placement is something that takes time and practice to develop.

I start every keyboarding class by reminding students about finger placement and posture. My district has purchased the PAWS Typing Program and Type to Learn. Any keyboarding program can be used for Step #6. These are links to the programs my district has purchased. I really like them both! PAWS TYPING: TYPE TO LEARN: Lesson Resources.
